August 2023

August 2023 Newsletter

We begin at 6pm this month.  It's Auction Time!

We meet at The Well Community
554 Pitt Rd, Brownsburg, IN 46112.

From Our President

Happy August.

The great ‘dog days’ of August are here. Kids are going back to school. The summer fun is still in full swing, but definitely starting to wrap up. We have had a full summer of activities including all the fairs and summer events.

This month’s meeting is always a great time. It is our AUCTION. Bring your Friends to participate in the fun. Seeing all the great donations to bid on is always exciting, and YOU, our guild members, always show up with the most beautiful treasures. Hopefully you are planning to bring your donations and be ready to bid on some great items. This is an important fundraiser for the Guild as the money raised helps to offset the cost of our programs and activities. Please know that your donations and purchases are greatly appreciated.

Be sure to check out all the great articles in our newsletter so that you can stay up to date on all the happenings. We have a lot ahead for the rest of the year with great programs and workshops, Retreat and Staycation. How you coming on your Challenges and the BOM projects?  Many, many of you have been working hard on donations quilts and Quilts of Valor, THANK YOU for your great work on these efforts.  Raffle Quilt sales are coming along… but we have a lot more to sell – so please help us get these tickets sold.

Can’t wait to see you at the AUCTION.

2023 Scrapbasket President

UPCOMING PROGRAMS

August Program:  Auction Time!!!

Calling all quilters you have some things to get rid of, but could also use some new things!! I think that is everyone, right?

The auction is coming up at the August 15th meeting, and will
begin at 6:00 pm. Please bring any quilt items that you would like to auction off and fill out a bid ticket. We will be setting up the auction starting at 5:00 pm, so if you want to come early and help, or if you need to fill out a bid ticket, we will be there!

Auction items can include fabric, UFOs, notions, books, puzzles, food, services (quilting) or anything that you think would make someone happy! We will also have the pattern/book table, so bring those too!

The pattern/book table will be sold for $1, and there will be raffle tickets for the board basket which will also be $1. We will accept cash or checks.

We will have baskets from the beelets for the live auction, and any items with more than 5 bids in the silent auction will automatically go to the live auction. We will also have ice cream!

The auction is one of the largest money makers for the guild, so please bring cash or check to purchase items and help bring great activities to the guild!!

Any questions? Please reach out to Amy Gilmore or Jenna Chamberlain.

September Program:

Scrap Quilts with Diane Knott

https://www.dianedknott.com

Diane made her first quilt in 1997 while expecting her first child. In 2012, and many quilts later, created an online pattern company and website called Butterfly Threads Quilting.   Since 2015, she has been traveling the country teaching quilt techniques and sharing the love of scrap quilts! Her two books Scrap Quilt Secrets and Strip Quilt Secrets have both been published by C&T.  She designs fabric for Blank Quilting Fabrics and enjoys longarming on her HQ Amara for herself and others. She’s  currently developing online classes and presentations that will be found on her website.

www.butterflythreadsquilting.com

She has published dozens of  patterns, created templates, and was a regular contributing writer to the Craftsy Quilting Blog for 5 years.  She has been featured in Quilt Magazine, Primitive Quilts and Patchwork, Fons and Porter Easy Quilts, and the American Patchwork and Quilting Calendar.

October Presenter:

Amy Friend - During Quiet Time

Amy Friend is a former museum curator turned designer.  She designs modern quilts and specializes in paper pieced designs.  She authored the books
Intentional Piecing (2016), Improv Paper Piecing: A Modern Approach to Quilt Design (2017), and Petal + Stem (2020).  She is an award-winning quilter and her quilts have been exhibited at a number of quilt shows as well as museums.  Amy is a national quilt teacher and lecturer.  Amy lives in Massachusetts with her husband and three children. If she isn’t sewing or spending time with the family, you might find her in the garden.  You can follow her creative path on her blog, www.duringquiettime.com or on Instagram @duringquiettime.

October Program:  Intentional Piecing

This trunk show will focus on the quilts found in her book, Intentional Piecing, but may include additional quilts as well. She will use these quilts to illustrate types of fussy cutting and to discuss fabric selection in general. How can you pick the best fabric for a pattern? How can a pattern really showcase a fabric design?

October Workshop:  Low Waste Paper Piecing

ONLINE Oct 18 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Students will use my Gulls quilt pattern to learn to foundation paper piece with efficiency.  I will teach my low waste approach to paper piecing and discuss its other benefits as well, as it related to keeping the fabric on grain.  Students who are new to foundation paper piecing will pick this technique up quickly!  Students who are well versed in FPP might find this approach counterintuitive.  It will add a new skill to your FPP toolbox once mastered.  We will discuss modern quilt design, particularly improv paper piecing and deconstruction.

November Program:  Quilt Tips & Tricks

Have you ever watched Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting on PBS?  If not, you should check it out at:

Love of Quilting

Each show ends with a segment that shares tips & tricks sent in by quilters.  We have a whole guild of savvy quilters who have their own tips and tricks dealing with quilting. We want you to share them with the guild.

Come prepared to share one of those tips and tricks with your guild.  You can walk us through a description, demonstrate the trick, or share a useful website you’ve found.  Anything goes!

We’ll collect all your Tips and Tricks and share them with the guild so we all won’t have to rely on our memories.

All presenters will be ticketed and one lucky person will receive an issue of Love of Quilting.

Challenges
Linda Auberry and Tammie Earnest

Our Challenge for this year is to finish our UFOs (UnFinished Objects)!

This month, let’s finish up our UFOs that ARE NOT QUILTS.

Did you take a bag class but never finished the project?

Do you have a table runner pieced but never finished the binding?

Have you pulled fabric to make bibs or burb towels but then set the project aside?

Maybe it’s an Ipad cover or a set of placemats that were never finished.

It doesn’t matter the size, but it does need to be something that you abandoned in the past and haven’t worked on for quite some time.

Please bring your finished UFOs to the August meeting.  We will check them in at the table and initial your sheets.  If there is not time for Show & Tell because of the Auction, then please bring your August UFOs to the September meeting along with your September UFO finish.

If you know of any Scrapbasket member needing a little cheer, please let Rhonda Nelson know. She will be happy to send a card from all of us. Thank you.

Donation Quilts
Susan Cinkoske, Cheri Guerrettaz, Bobbie Brinson

August is Auction Month so save those donation items until September, unless you won’t be here in September.

If you have ever had someone in a nursing home, you know how fun playing BINGO is for them. The month of August and September, I am collecting small handmade or purchased gifts to be used as prizes at Brownsburg Meadows.  The residents love to win little trinkets or useful items.  Kleenex holders, small drawstring bags, mug rugs, bookmarks, dresser scarves, and small baskets can be made from your scraps. The dollar store has many small items that can be purchased or perhaps someone has given you a little knick-knack that you no longer want.  Any of those items will work.

Any kitchen items like potholders, napkins, and placemats can be given to the Hendricks County Senior Services for prizes.

October is Pillowcase month.  Find a yard of fabric for a child or teen and create a pillowcase that can be used for a foster child.  Checkout the burrito method on YouTube for a really easy way to make a pillowcase.

And don’t forget those baby items for Villages of Indiana. Burp cloths, small flannel wipes, and bibs can be made from scraps of flannel.

Since this month is the auction my little red wagon will be
staying home and will not be bringing any goodies to sew. But if

Raffle Quilt

Here is a full photo of our Raffle Quilt.  Please share it with anyone who might be interested in buying a ticket.

With the ever-increasing cost of programs and supplies, selling of our raffle tickets make it possible for us to keep our membership dues at a lower price point.  I’m very excited about the enthusiasm that you all have for our raffle quilt this year.  We are ever so grateful for our 2022 Raffle Quilt Committee who worked together to sew our beautiful quilt.

Not picked up your tickets yet?  Pick up your initial set and another set of 24.  It's not too late to start selling.  Please check in with Heather Kopeschka, she has notes on your ticket selling activity.  We have more tickets and prizes….keep selling!

Lastly, if you wish to be involved in the 2023 Raffle Quilt Committee for a quilt that will be raffled in 2024, please reach out to our President, Beth Archer.

Thank you for all you do to make our guild great!

Upcoming Quilt Show

Hi Scrapbasket Quilters,

We would like to invite your quilt guild members to our annual Mudsock Quilters Guild quilt show.  Over 300 quilts, made by guild members, will be on display from 10 am -3pm on November 11, 2023 at Cornerstone Lutheran Church in Fishers. The $5.00 entry fee supports Mudsocks charitable programs.

At the conclusion of the show, we prepare these quilts for donation to Community North Hospitals in Indianapolis. In late December each year, people who are hospitalized will be offered a warm, handmade quilt to help brighten the holiday season.  Mudsock Quilters Guild has been donating quilts to people in the hospital for more than six years.

The show also features vendors for holiday shopping, a quilt raffle, our “steals and deals” table, and many many door prizes!
