October Program (October 19):

Lois Levihn – Born Again Quilts

“Quilt Restoration”

Lois Levihn (le veen) is the owner of Born Again Quilts restoration studio located on the south side of Fort Wayne. Her mother, Dorothy, was her first needlework teacher at age 9. After embroidering too many dishtowels, potholders and pillowcases, Lois wanted to learn how to quilt. She did so under the tutelage of Bette Schlichtenmeyer owner of the Golden Thimble Quilt Emporium that was located on North Wells St. in the early 1980’s Lois started restoring quilts when she started purchasing ones in less than great condition. She found her passion in restoring quilts back to life that others deemed “unworthy”. She has attended workshops at the Kirk Collection and seminars by her favorite quilt personality… Quilter Hall of Famer Barbara Brackman. In 2005 Lois spent two weeks in the South of France studying the textiles and quilts of this historic region. Born Again Quilts moved to its new location in October 2012 at 4005 South Wayne Ave. In 2013 the façade was given a much-needed facelift thanks to the City of Fort Wayne’s façade grant program. In August 2014 the staff of Country Living Magazine purchased a quilt from BAQ and not only featured it in the November issue, the editor also recommended BAQ for vintage textiles and provided the BAQ Etsy website address bringing hundreds of new viewers to the site. This October Lois will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of her Waynedale News column “Around the Frame”. She was recently asked by Charles Shepard, President and CEO of the Fort Wayne Museum of Art to assist in evaluating the museum’s quilt collection.
