From Our President

Happy New Year ScrapBasket Guild,

It is a new year and I hope that 2023 has started well for you. A New Year often means we give ourself a ‘fresh start’ full of expectations of what the year can bring and what we will accomplish.  I suspect that many of you have lined up the ‘must do’ quilting and sewing projects for the year.  It will be wonderful to see you share your projects at upcoming meetings.  Your talent is such an inspiration for all of us.

Let’s start the year by THANKING all of you who assumed officer roles and committee responsibilities in 2022.  Thanks to your hard work, 2022 was year of great programs, a fun BOM, amazing generosity with the number of charity quilts and Quilts of Valor, not 1 but 2 raffle quilts, challenge quilts, a successful auction, a fun Staycation and so much more.  It is great to look back on all the success.

2023 promises to be every bit as fun and exciting. Thank you to each person who has stepped up for officer roles and committees.  We are excited about your willingness to serve.  Check out more information in this newsletter about the 2023 BOM, Wonky Stars exchange, the exciting programs and workshops planned…. So much to look forward to.

Are you planning to attend this year’s 30th Anniversary IHQS in Bloomington, March 2-4?   Scrapbasket Guild will be selling raffle tickets for this year’s raffle quilt.  In order to sell tickets at the show and display our raffle quilt, we need to provide 30 volunteer hours.  Please visit
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C4FAAA629ABF58-2023  today to sign up to volunteer.  Each volunteer received a free one-day pass to the show for each shift you work.  What a great way to get into the show for free AND support Scrapbasket Raffle Quilt sales.  A win for everyone.

It is also a great year to invite all your quilting friends to join Scrapbasket Guild.  Why don’t you give them a call and invite them to come with you to the January Meeting. Let’s share the fun and gain new friends.

Presentation: Indigo Dyeing in Japan

I spent nearly a month in Japan, and half of my time was at a wonderful indigo workshop in the country. The rest of the time was spent eating up art, culture, and as much food as possible.

GETTING BLUE HANDS IN JAPAN

1 hour + Q&A: In this talk, I explore how my love of Japanese culture, travel, textiles and “blue and white” came together in a fantastic journey to Japan. In this textile talk, I take you virtually with me to an indigo dyeing workshop in the country near Mt. Fuji. We will explore two kinds of Japanese indigo dyeing processes that use resist: katazome (paste resist dyeing using stencils) and shibori (bound or stitch resist dyeing). I’ll talk about how my particular modern design approach is influenced by Japan, and how I like to incorporate these traditional fabrics into modern quilt compositions.  Besides thoroughly exploring katazome and shibori techniques, I will also give a virtual trunk show of my work, including an indigo-inspired quilt that I designed, as well as paper-based stitched artwork that I created by dyeing paper in indigo using shibori techniques. We’ll also make brief forays into Japanese architecture, cuisine, and shopping for fabric. By the end of the talk, you may be inspired to try some dyeing yourself, or maybe even take a journey to Japan in the future.

Zoom Workshop: Mini Mid-Mod Quilts

Wednesday, January 18 Noon - 3 p.m.
Price: $25 for members, $30 for non-members

Link will be sent to you after you register.

These charming little quilts are inspired by Mid-Century Modern design, and are a great skill-building project to learn a number of quilting techniques.

WORK SMALL, WORK SMART, LOOK GREAT.

3 hours: We will start with a simple, modern color palette of neutral fabrics with a flash of color. Clean lines combined with simple design give each tiny composition a sophisticated feeling. Since we are working very small, this is a great project for using small scraps and bits of special fabric.

Participants will learn the quilt-as-you-go method, and a PDF materials and supplies list will be emailed in advance. Hand stitching adds a sleek, linear element. Finishing techniques will be demonstrated. This workshop is a 3-hour live-stream event, conducted on Zoom, consisting of live instruction (no recording, please). You should have the current version of Zoom installed on your computer or laptop. Guidance for getting started will be sent in advance of the workshop.

  • Select a range of neutral fabrics (all light, medium or dark), and a bright accent color. Solids, and subtle, small scale prints or textures work best.

  • Cut cotton batting and backing fabric into 5″ squares.

  • Cut a selection of the neutral fabrics into small strips (sizes will be provided).

  • Cut a small amount of the bright accent color fabric.

  • Learn the quilt-as-you-go technique, working from the inside out.

  • Explore strip piecing and leaving the raw edges on the outside for extra texture.

  • Trim your small quilt blocks and stay stitch the edges.

  • Learn about hand stitching, and experiment with adding your own design.

  • Sew the backing onto the top of your mini quilts, leaving a space for turning.

  • Turn and press, then do a final stitching around the perimeter

A complete PDF supply list, plus step-by-step notes and templates will be emailed to each participant. Class sizes are limited to ensure one-on-one time.  This is an all-levels class. You should be comfortable using your sewing machine, and it should be in good working order. I look forward to sharing and sewing with you!

Join in the fun as we celebrate everyone's birthday in style.  Yes, we will be celebrating EVERYONE's birthday with games, party food, and some laughs.

If you have a fun food you like to enjoy at birthday parties, you are welcome to bring along to share, but don't feel you need to. We will have cake and ice cream for all.  Finally, if you have a fun "Birthday Photo" of yourself please send it to Beth Archer,

Thank you to all who donated last year.  We donated 63 stockings, 22 pillowcases, 53 bingo prizes, and 33 quilts to the Hendricks County Senior Citizens, Brownsburg Meadows, Sheltering Wings and foster children.  Plus one member donated a quilt to Sheltering Wings for their annual auction.

We also have batting for any quilts that you would like to make for donation quilts.  Just call or email before Monday and I will bring to the January meeting.

Thanks to all who have donated last year!  You are awesome.

Quilts of Valor

I’d like to share with you an email I received from Kay Miller before Christmas:

Wishing you a Blessed Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

Our QOV group awarded 105 quilts this year.  This could not be possible without the incredible help from the guild.  I truly pray the guild will continue to help us in the new year.

Deepest Thank you and gratefulness for your continued support through the years.

Kay

I hope you are ready to make some QOV.

Just a reminder about some QOV  guidelines since we’ve slept since I last wrote an article for the newsletter.

Size:  minimum size 55” X 65”,  maximum size 72” X 87”, ideal size 57” X 67”.
Use quality 100% cotton fabrics, preferably patriotic red, white, blue, and gold. No children’s novelties or specific military branches.  The majority of recipients  are men.

You can make a completed quilt by yourself or with a group and turn it in.  You can make just a top, and I will see that is gets machine quilted.  We have many talented longarmers in the guild that are generous with their time and will quilt them.  I can provide batting, backing, and binding.  When the tops are quilted I will ask for binding help.  Again we have many talented quilters who like to do bindings.

Also I have some ideas up my sleeve for block patterns you can make, and we’ll put them together into a quilt.  We also need pillowcases.  You see there are lots of ways you can help and support our vets.

I’m also looking for someone who could make black and white copies of patterns.
The UPS now wants 40 cents a copy.  I can provide the paper.

I am excited to start sewing QOV again after the holiday hiatus.  Look for my little red wagon at the quilt meeting to see if there is something that you might enjoy doing.

2022 President's Block

As we get 2023 started, its not too late to THANK and celebrate our 2022 fearless leader and president, Heather Kopeschka, for all that she has done... many, many hours of preparing for and leading our meetings, helping behind the scenes to support all of our activities and those who are leading them, and so much more.  It is our tradition to present our President with a thank you gift of 'Blocks' made by members of the guild.  It is the President's choice on the types of blocks, color, size, etc.  This year, Heather, is asking that we make "Flying Geese" that she will use in a border of a quilt that is very special to her.

So, help us celebrate Heather with bright scrappy colored, Flying Geese, 3 1/2" by 6 1/2", on a low volume white background.

If you would like instructions for this block, please visit this website:
https://liveartgalleryfabrics.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Flying-Geese.pdf

It's not too late to make a block to thank Heather!  Please bring it with you in January.

Block Swap Information

It is not too late to join the Wonky Ladies!  If you would like to join, we have room!  Below is our latest email communication.

Hello Wonky Swappers!!! (I couldn’t help myself…hehe)

So sorry this is coming to you so late.  I have no doubt that you have been busy yourselves and can hardly believe we are only 12 days away from Christmas.  So, down to some wonky business…we have 6 people signed up for our Wonky Star swap.  So, you will need to make at least 6 wonky stars to swap with others…I am asking for any last minute folks in December, so keep that in mind as you begin sewing your wonky stars.

I feel like 6 stars won’t be enough for a quilt, but a maybe a nice wall hanging….make a few extras…made by you, and you have enough for a great quilt.  If you wish to swap more than 6, I can try to accommodate, if I have multiple folks wanting to swap more.  So, please reply to this email how many you want to swap.  No worries if that changes, but it helps for planning.
I have also attached the files from the newsletter last month so you can have these details and tutorials at your fingertips.  Please read through our schedule again…cause…our first part of our challenge is approaching!

  • December 15:  share your fabric pull or a finished star on FB group: Scrapbasket Quilters

  • January meeting:  bring your stars to swap

  • February meeting:  Swapped stars are handed back to you (possibly sooner, at library meeting room early Feb)

  • March meeting:  make your quilt top to bring in and share!

Don’t forget, I want to see some Wonky Stars or a fabric pull photos on our FB Group, Scrapbasket Quilters this weekend!!

Looking forward to seeing the wonky stars in your eyes!
