From Our President

A New Year, A Fresh Start

Happy New Year quilting friends.

As we step into January, we’re greeted with endless possibilities – a blank canvas, much like an uncut piece of fabric, full of potential to create something beautiful.  This is the perfect time to reflect on our past projects, celebrate our accomplishments, and set goals for the months ahead.

Our guild is built on community and creativity, and I’m excited for all that we will share together this year.  Whether it’s learning new techniques, finishing those UFOs, or lending a hand through our charitable projects, we’ll continue to stitch memories and strengthen friendships.

Let’s this be the year to try something new – maybe a color palette outside your comfort zone, a challenging pattern, or even volunteering in a new way within our guild.  Growth and creativity often go hand in hand, and there’s no better time to start than now.

Thank you for being a part of this vibrant community.  I look forward to seeing the masterpieces you create this year and the joy we will share along the way.

Here’s to a year of inspiration, stitching, and laughter!

Warmly,

Dana Sederoff

President, Scrapbasket Quilt Guild

Refreshments 2025

REFRESHMENTS FOR SCRAPBASKET MEETINGS

Our meeting refreshments have been a big hit.  Who doesn’t love a special treat!  We provide the table covering, plates, napkins and utensils, along with small bottles of water.  We’re asking for sign ups to bring snacks for a meeting.  Get together with your friends or beelet and volunteer for a meeting.  I’ll be passing the sign up sheet around.  Thanks!

Outgoing President Block

Angie has chosen the Shoo Fly block. Either 6” or 12”. A fussy cut center square would be ideal. Background is light and the rest of the block medium or dark - no defined color scheme. Instructions attached and blocks will be collected at both the December and January meetings. Thanks for your participation in this fun annual event!

Shoo Fly Quilt Block Tutorial

Melissa Mortenson

How to create a Shoo Fly Quilt Block in 6" or 12" finished size. The finished size of a quilt block refers to the size the block is after it is sewn into a quilt. These blocks will measure 12 1/2" & 6 1/2" square after you are done constructing them.

EQUIPMENT

Sewing Machine (I recommend BERNINA or Bernette).

Rotary Cutter

Marking Pencil

Ruler

• For 12" block, 4 1/2" Bloc Loc Ruler (not required but recommended).

• For 6" block, 2 1/2" Bloc Loc Ruler (not required but recommended).

SUPPLIES

12" Finished Quilt Block

2 pieces Fabric 5" x 5" for Half Square Triangle

2 pieces Background Fabric 5" x 5" for Half Square Triangle

4 pieces Background Fabric 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"

1 piece Fabric 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" For Center of Block

6" Finished Quilt Block

2 pieces Fabric 3" x 3" for Half Square Triangle

2 pieces Background Fabric 3" x 3" for Half Square Triangle

4 pieces Background Fabric 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"

1 piece Fabric 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" for Center of Block

INSTRUCTIONS

Create the 12" Finished Block

1. Create 4 Half Square Triangles from your 5" fabric pieces.

2. To create the Half Square Triangles, layer one 5" fabric piece with one 5" background fabric piece, right sides facing.

3. Draw a diagonal line down the center of the block on the wrong side of the fabric

4. On your sewing machine, sew 1/4" on the outside of the line you just drew on both sides of the line.

5. Cut the piece apart along the line you drew.

6. Press the seams towards the darker fabric.

7. Trim and square up the block to 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"

Repeat with the other two 5" fabric squares.

You should now have 4 sewn Half Square Triangles

8. Arrange your sewn half square triangles and squares of fabric as shown in the diagram. You will have 3 rows with 3 blocks in each row.

9. Sew the blocks of row 1 together, press the seams toward the center of the block.

10. Sew the blocks of row 2 together, press the seams towards the outside of the block.

11. Sew the blocks of row 3 together, press the seams towards the center of the block.

12. Sew the rows together.

To Create a 6" Finished Block

1. Repeat the steps above. You will use the 3" pieces to create your half square triangles. After they are sewn, square them up to 2 1/2" x 2 1/2".

2. Complete the rest of the block using the cut 2 1/2" square pieces of fabric.

Note:  If you notice your printer is cutting off some of your text, make sure you have "headers and footers" checked in your print dialogue box.

Amanda will lead us in a fun 3 hour workshop over one of her best loved free pattern tutorials, Hexaround.  “You will need a total of 72 jelly roll strips to make this quilt that finishes at a great throw size of 60” x 64”.  The piecing of this quilt requires NO Y-SEAMS and comes together pretty quickly.  It’s a great pattern for beginner and advanced quilters alike.”  Come prepared with your favorite jelly roll of fabric to try out this stunning pattern!

March Program

Revel in some St. Patrick’s Day spirit with Leann McGiveron of Sumac Studios.  She will share her lecture, Ireland Inspired-Interlacing Visual and Textile Arts.  “A presentation that is the story behind ‘Ireland Inspired’ … how color bridges my work in travel photography with my Celtic knot textile/quilt pieces.”

Committee Activities

Block of the Month & Challenges
Beth Archer

BOM and Challenge Quilt combined

This year we are doing things a bit different.  The Block of the Month and Challenge Quilts are combined.  Each month you will be challenged to create a block that fits the theme AND techniques.  You have complete control over the size of blocks you make each month and the way you interpret the theme.  You can plan to combine your monthly blocks into one quilt OR have smaller projects using your monthly blocks.  At the end of the year, we will have a show to feature each of your projects along with a bit of friendly competition.

So let's get started.  For January the theme is "Celebrate the New Year" and the techniques are improvisation or crazy quilt.  Pick your own colors and show us your creative talents.

Cheer
Rhonda Nelson

If you know of any Scrapbasket member needing a little cheer, please let Rhonda Nelson know. She will be happy to send a card from all of us. Thank you.

Donation Quilts
Cindi Johnson

We can use finished quilts of any size but particularly baby, child and lap, probably nothing larger than twin. Quilt tops are great, there is a group that will complete them. Donations of batting, yardage or fabric pieces can be accepted. Fat quarters, layer cake, charm packs, jelly rolls are wonderful, and partial of the packs are good if you have leftovers.  Even a few pieces can be matched with something else.  If you are donating scraps, please have them in useable chunks whenever possible (2 inch squares, 5 inch squares, 2 1/2 inch strips, etc.).  Its a great way to declutter your sewing space and get rid of all of the leftover pieces from old projects.

If there is anyone who is willing to just piece, or just quilt, let me know and we can get you together. Quilting does not have to be fancy, just quick and easy.  Keep in mind that many donated quilts get washed frequently so the sturdier the better.

Thank you!!
Cindi Johnson

Fundraising
Angie Hubbell

We’re excited to announce the creation of a new Fundraising Committee, aimed at supporting our guild’s mission and helping us connect with the community.  Truthfully, I have no idea what I’m doing yet—but I’m diving in with enthusiasm and learning as I go!

As this committee grows, we’ll plan a variety of events throughout the year, and I’m inviting members to join in by volunteering for the ones that interest them most. You can choose what works best for you, making it simple to get involved on your own schedule. Keep an eye out for updates as we share the exciting events we have planned! If you have any questions or ideas, contact Angie Hubbell at 765-860-8711 or email anghubbell421@gmail.com.

Retreat News

Happy New year 2025!

At his time in this New year, I am not planning on a retreat in the Fall.  Let's all plan to attend the Staycation and enjoy all the fun for that day.

There are lots of volunteer opportunities for all of us to help with this year.  Project Linus, Quilts of Valor and a multitude of other great projects.

This year let us try to reduce our stash and share with one another.

Lots of Good Wishes in this new and wonderous year.

Quilts of Valor

A New Year and A New Quilt Block

QOV is going on hiatus for a few months while I recover from surgery.

BUT, don’t let that stop you and your friends from getting a head start on a QOV.  The block this year is the log cabin. Directions with measurements, colors, and suggestions for settings can be found on the QOVF.org web page.  The block is fun, fast, and easy.  If you are cutting out one block, you might as well cut out a few more.

As in the past the guild will provide batting and backing for your quilt tops.

I will eventually have some block kits and pillowcase kits for you to do.

As always, Kay was over the moon thrilled with the quilts we made last year.  She always says we do outstanding, quality work.

IN Heritage Quilt Show Volunteer

Happy New Year! It’s a new year and a new Indiana Heritage Quilt Show coming up in March. We need your help. Many of you volunteer year after year, and some volunteer for multiple shifts at each show. It’s hard to find words to express our gratitude for your generosity of time and enthusiasm, so I’ll just say THANK YOU from me personally and from all of us on the IHQS Board.

We are using Signup Genius again this year to register volunteers. We want to give past volunteers first choice of dates and times. The link to volunteer is below.
You’ll see a couple of changes in the jobs. We will not be selling Merchandise this year and we plan for volunteer check-ins to be done by Board Members near the ticket desk.

We have also added a slot for help with pre-show quilt hanging. This job requires standing for long periods and lifting and carrying quilts. It helps if you are comfortable with ladder work, but it's not required.

One thing that hasn’t changed is that volunteers receive a free pass to the show for each shift worked.

We hope you will join us in 2025 for another great show--March 6-8.

With gratitude,

Bloomington Quilt Show

The Bloomington Quilt Show is March 6-8, 2025 at the Monroe Convention Center, Bloomington, IN. The following is information was provided to us by the Indiana Heritage Quilt Show for anyone interested in participating or attending.

  • The challenge this year is a 30"x30" wall hanging made with your birthstone color. If you don't like your color, use another birthstone color instead. You have lots of options. You can use any technique and subject as long as your quilt is made with at least 50% of the birthstone color. Prizes for the challenge are the same as other categories: $500 first place, $200 second, $100 third.

  • Workshop registrations are open online at our website. We have 6 nationally recognized instructors this year. The 18 workshops include all types--appliqué, machine quilting, piecing, and design.

  • What you may not know is that in early January we have to cancel any teachers who do not have enough registrations. So, registering now helps ensure that your favorite instructor will be at the show.

  • Our website, IHQS.org, is where you register for workshops, enter your quilt, and read all about special events.

Photo Directory Reminder
