From Our President

Scrapbasket Friends,

March snuck in like a lamb and, wow, have we been able to enjoy some great weather.  All the spring flowers are showing up and bringing that fresh feeling of spring.

So what is getting you excited about Spring?  Many of you have taken advantage of the great quilting offerings, by attending the Indiana State Quilt Guild retreat, or Quilt Con, or the Bloomington Heritage Quilt Show.  These are a bit like “Spring”  -- so many beautiful colors, such amazing designs, creativity flows.. getting us excited about a new project.  Bring your new creations and show them off at our March meeting.  We all want to enjoy your projects.

Thanks to everyone who helped sell raffle tickets at the Bloomington show.  If you haven’t seen our raffle quilt, come to the meeting and check it out.  It is BEAUTIFUL - a wonderful display of color and beautiful art and craftsmanship.

March is the month we will begin our “Social Time” before the meeting begins.  Come 30 minutes early (6:30 p.m.) and Join us for a few snacks and great conversation before the meeting.  And just for fun, we are going to hold a ‘fat quarter exchange’.  Bring a (or two or more) “ugly duckling fat quarter” and exchange with others.  After all one person’s (oh my goodness what was I thinking when I bought that one) ugly fat quarter is someone’s else treasure.  So come prepared to take home a treasure.

This month’s program promises to be an exciting program.  If you haven’t signed up for the workshop to be held the next day, be sure to see Eugenia and get signed up to participate in the workshop to be held on March 22.

Read on and learn about all the other great plans for our guild.  Our committee chairs are making our year an exciting one.

Happy Spring…

Beth Archer

Sheila Frampton Cooper

BIO:  After channeling her artistic muse through painting, jewelry making and architectural photography for many years, Sheila plunged into abstract quilt making in 2010.  Guided by intuition and inspired by nature’s palette, she speeds into journeys of revelation and surprise. Her intensity is apparent in the colors, lines and shapes of her improvisational textile works.

Since embarking on her fiber art adventure, Sheila has won awards at major quilt shows, including: IQA World of Beauty in Houston, AQS Show in Paducah and Road to California. Her work has been exhibited worldwide.

Presentation: SPONTANEOUS CREATION AND INSPIRATION

This talk goes deep into my process. I discuss color, inspiration, and the various approaches I engage when doing this type of work. I'll share a variety of student work as well as a few other artists and discuss what I feel makes a piece successful. This is a fun talk full of eye candy!

Zoom Workshop: Lines and Curves

Wednesday, March 22 11 am - 5pm
The Zoom link will be provided one week in advance.

Students will combine thick and thin lines with curved pieces and assemble the quilt top in rows. There are infinite possibilities. Sheila will demonstrate construction techniques for sewing curved seams and discuss some of the challenges you may run into with spontaneous design and piecing.

Fabric Swap

This is the month for our Fabric Swap. If you would like to participate, bring a bag of scraps that equals at least 5 fat quarters. The fabric should coordinate, such as all bright colors, pastels, or complementary colors, etc.  This can even be an old project that you would like someone else to finish.  You may use the scraps anyway you wish to complete a donation quilt.  In the bag you will also receive 3 tickets for our monthly and yearly drawings.  The quilt you make for the swap can be turned in anytime during the year.  April’s UFO Challenge project is to finish a project someone else gave you –perfect way to get a project from someone else!

Quilts of Valor

Things are busy with QOV.  We had lots of scrappy star blocks returned last meeting.  There were 6 QOV kits taken by longarmers to quilt and 2 tops turned in ready to be kitted.  I delivered 3 completed QOV and 10 pillowcases to Kay when I went to the Heritage Quilt Show in Bloomington.

So keep working on what you are working on.  We’ve got momentum. Turn in any past blocks you’ve been working on whenever you get them done

This month I’m going to have the pattern for the 2023 National Block Drive available along with a kit or you can use fabric from your stash if it is patriot red, white, and blue.  We are going to work on these blocks for 4 months.  Hopefully we will get enough blocks to assemble 3 to 4 quilts. I picture about 12 blocks per quilt.  The block is fun and easy to construct.

Come look for me and my little red wagon at the meeting.

Quilt Retreat

McCormick's Creek Canyon Inn
September 15-17

We have reserved rooms for 25 retreaters.  Two queen beds in each room. Rooms are vintage and a little small.

Meals will be on your own, we could not get a group food rate at this time. Canyon Inn has a restaurant on site. It serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and they have a full menu. Soup and salad bar at lunch is 12.99. I would suggest you plan to perhaps bring cereal, oatmeal and fruit for your room if you want to reduce costs. Chicken salad and premade salads also are good to bring for lunches. There is a microwave and refrigerator in each room.

No food in the sewing room is allowed; water will be available in the sewing room. There will be cutting tables and pressing stations also in the sewing rooms. If you bring your own iron, it must be the small travel type irons. We suggest bringing a covered mug or glass for drinks.  We can get into the sewing room at 9 am on Friday morning, our sleeping rooms will not be ready until 4pm. There is a $7.00 one-time charge to get into the park per vehicle.  We are working on getting a one-day class available, the kit will be cut, prepared and ready to assemble.

Cost: one person in room $400
Three people in room $135 each
Two people in room $200 each
Four people in room $100 each

A $50 deposit per room will hold your room. We only have 13 rooms available. Balance is due August 1st.

Also, we are always looking for guild participation, and if you want to be involved with next year’s raffle quilt, please reach out to Guild President, Beth Archer.

Scrapbasket is off to a great start with our Annual Raffle Quilt.  We sold 408 tickets at this year’s Heritage Quilt Show in Bloomington and we have another great opportunity coming with the Indiana Quilters Trail Shop Hop from March 22 – 25th.  We will have a booth at Mike’s shop and would love help over the busiest days to keep tickets sales going strong.  We will have a sign-up sheet going around at the March meeting or reach out to Heather at 317-445-3754 (cell) or
s.h.Kopeschka@gmail.com to volunteer.

Block Swap Information

 Wonky Star Swappers!

Keep working on your tops.  We are targeting the month of July to share our work.  Be creative and above all sew and have fun!

Indiana State Fair Pioneer Village

Last summer we worked at quilting frame at the Pioneer Village at the state fair.  We handed out little "quilts" to the children.  They were 2.5" squares with top, batting and bottom sewn down the middle in a +.  If you would like to help with making these little quilts, we would love to have you use up your colorful scraps for this project.  Also, if you are interested in doing a shift at the Indiana State Fair Pioneer Village at the quilting frame(hand quilting), please let us know.

Thanks,
Marylynne Meranda and Ruth Ruble
