May 2023 Newsletter

We meet the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM.

Please join us at 6:30pm for a bit of fellowship time and refreshments.

We meet at The Well.Community
554 Pitt Rd, Brownsburg, IN 46112.

From Our President

Dear Scrapbasket Quilters,

The Flowers are blooming, the gardens are tilled and planting has begun, and the engines are revving.  It must be May in Indiana.  The festivities of school graduations and end of the school year are underway.  May is just a fun filled month with lots of energy, color and creativity.

That sounds a lot like our Guild.  Full of fun, friendliness, a bit frivolity, and definitely lots of fellowship.   Thanks to each of you who bring your bright shining faces to each meeting, participate in all the wonderful activities, bring your friends to join in the fun and basically keep the energy of our quilting community a great place for us all to convene.

We have a great program lined up for the May meeting.  Come early and spend a little social time with each other before we get down to business.  We will have simple snacks and lots of great conversations beginning at 6:30 p.m.

See you then.

Beth Archer

2023  Scrapbasket Programs

May 2023

May Program:

HollyAnne Knight of String & Story

While HollyAnne's first exposure to machine sewing was at the young age of 8, it was much more recently that she returned to it. She began with a tshirt quilt for her Mama. Now, years after that first tshirt quilt made her fall in love with quilting, she is passionate about providing encouraging, high quality quilting education.

HollyAnne is the Founder & CEO of String & Story whose mission is to guide more quilters around the world to quilt with confidence rather than being afraid they will "mess up" their quilt.  String & Story teaches quilting with confidence and how to become a free motion Quilting Rockstar. She has worked with 20,000 students from 17 different countries around the world.

HollyAnne will talk to us about Quilting Plans.

May Workshop:

Crumb Quilts with Eugenia Fernandez

Wed May 17 - 6 – 9 p.m. at The Well Community

Members $25   Non-members $40

Are you drowning in scraps and don’t know what to do with them?  Make a Crumb Quilt!  This workshop will introduce you to the idea of crumb quilts and how to create them.  There is no one right way, but I’ll show you an easy way to get started.  The best thing is that there are no rules and no measuring.  It’s a very freeing way to sew, and there’s no need for pins or a seam ripper.

Want to try it and don’t have scraps?  Don’t worry – I have scraps enough for everyone.

Supply List

Sewing machine in good order

Ruler (min 12”) & rotary cutter

Square ruler as large as your desired block size (not required but helpful)

Cutting mat

Basic sewing supplies (scissors, thread, bobbins, bag for trash)

Scraps  of all sizes

Note:  Extension cords will be helpful.  Please bring one if you can.

June Program:

Quilting Tools & Techniques

Find out what new tools and techniques are out there as representatives from Not Your Average Quilter, Love It Sew, and Quilts Plus introduce us to new or revered quilting tools or techniques and explain it all to us.  Each store will also have a sale table with opportunities to purchase items.

July Program:

Eliu Hernandez, Textile Artist

Presentation: Reclamation Alchemy: Potential and Beauty in Used Materials

Salvaging even the thread from discarded garments such as jeans, denim textile artist Eliu Hernandez uses materials that have been discarded by others to create art with life and texture. The process goes through many stages as he takes jeans and shirts apart stitch by stitch in order to waste nothing. This yields him fabric with rich patinas and interesting shapes that he challenges himself to use, making the most of every bit of material.

Eliu says ” I’m a reclamation specialist. So all of my work includes recycled, reused, upcycled materials. I’ve made quilts which have reclaimed fabrics included in the tops, backs and batting. I’ve been improving on a technique to harvest usable lengths of thread from specific seams in clothes. Then I’ve incorporated #reclaimedthread into my hand-quilting. As a result, I have pieces entirely hand-quilted with reused thread!”

Quilts of Valor

Quilt Retreat

McCormick's Creek Canyon Inn
September 15-17

We have reserved rooms for 25 retreaters.  Two queen beds in each room. Rooms are vintage and a little small.

Meals will be on your own, we could not get a group food rate at this time. Canyon Inn has a restaurant on site. It serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and they have a full menu. Soup and salad bar at lunch is 12.99. I would suggest you plan to perhaps bring cereal, oatmeal and fruit for your room if you want to reduce costs. Chicken salad and premade salads also are good to bring for lunches. There is a microwave and refrigerator in each room.

No food in the sewing room is allowed; water will be available in the sewing room. There will be cutting tables and pressing stations also in the sewing rooms. If you bring your own iron, it must be the small travel type irons. We suggest bringing a covered mug or glass for drinks.  We can get into the sewing room at 9 am on Friday morning, our sleeping rooms will not be ready until 4pm. There is a $7.00 one-time charge to get into the park per vehicle.  We are working on getting a one-day class available, the kit will be cut, prepared and ready to assemble.

Cost: one person in room $400
Three people in room $135 each
Two people in room $200 each
Four people in room $100 each

A $50 deposit per room will hold your room. We only have 13 rooms available. Balance is due August 1st.

Raffle Quilt

Here is a full photo of our Raffle Quilt.  Please share it with anyone who might be interested in buying a ticket.

With the ever-increasing cost of programs and supplies, selling of our raffle tickets make it possible for us to keep our membership dues at a lower price point.  I’m very excited about the enthusiasm that you all have for our raffle quilt this year.  We are ever so grateful for our 2022 Raffle Quilt Committee who worked together to sew our beautiful quilt.  Last month we had $280 in raffle ticket money turned in, for a total so far this year of $701.  WOWZA!  Great job Scrapbasket!  Our monthly top seller for April was Elizabeth Coffey.  Congratulations!

Our special for the Month of May, we are Racing for Raffle!  Sell and turn in your packet of 24 tickets AND get another set of 24 and collect a FREE fat quarter.  Already sold your first set of 24 tickets?  No worries, collect another set and collect your free Fat Quarter.  Not picked up your tickets?  Pick up your initial set and another set of 24 (48 tickets total) and collect a free FQ.  Must be present at the May meeting to participate…and have good intentions to sell tickets.  Please check in with Heather Kopeschka, she has notes on your ticket selling activity.  We have more tickets and prizes….keep selling, cause there will be a top seller for the month of May too!

I have 2 opportunities to take our quilt to the road!  I am looking for two (2) volunteers to go to Backdoor Quilts in Greenwood starting at 8:45 – about noon on Saturday, June 3rd.  I also need two (2) volunteers to go to Quilts Plus in Lebanon on Saturday, June 13th from 9-noon.  There is extra traffic on these days at the shops due to their monthly BOM sewers check-in.  If you are volunteering, remember the shoppers may not be aware of us and what we do…this is a great opportunity to give some information about our guild to future new members!  See Heather Kopeschka at the May meeting or reach out via email
s.h.kopeschka@gmail.com or text (317)-445-3754 to sign up.  Remember by volunteering, you will get an entry to win a fabric bundle in October collated by Mike Stephens himself.  Yay!

Lastly, if you wish to be involved in the 2023 Raffle Quilt Committee for a quilt that will be raffled in 2024, please reach out to our President, Beth Archer.

Thank you for all you do to make our guild great!
Heather Kopeschka

Block Swap Information

 Wonky Star Swappers!

Keep working on your tops.  We are targeting the month of July to share our work.  Be creative and above all sew and have fun!

Indiana State Fair Pioneer Village

Last summer we worked at quilting frame at the Pioneer Village at the state fair.  We handed out little "quilts" to the children.  They were 2.5" squares with top, batting and bottom sewn down the middle in a +.  If you would like to help with making these little quilts, we would love to have you use up your colorful scraps for this project.  Also, if you are interested in doing a shift at the Indiana State Fair Pioneer Village at the quilting frame(hand quilting), please let us know.

Thanks,
Marylynne Meranda and Ruth Ruble
