Colorful Tropics is an out-of-print pattern that the wonderful designer Barbara Bieraugel has given the Scrapbasket Quilt Guild permission to use as the 2023 Block of the Month! Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Tan: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/2″ squares. (ONE (1) of these will be sewn in Row #2 & the other ONE (1) will be sewn in the left-hand corner portion, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Tan: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ strips. (ONE (1) of these will be sewn into Row #1 & the other ONE (1) will be sewn in the left-hand corner portion, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Light Brown: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This will be sewn in the left-hand corner portion as needed for this quilt block.)
- Light Brown: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ strip. (This will be sewn into Row #2 & will be flanked one ONE (1) side by the Tan 3 1/2″ square & on the other side by the Brown 3 1/2″ square. As needed for this quilt block.)
- Brown: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This will be sewn into Row #2 & will flank a Tan 3 1/2″ x
6 1/2″ strip, as needed for this quilt block.) - Brown: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ strip. (This will be sewn into Row #1 as needed for this quilt block.)
- Brown: Cut ONE (1) 6 1/2″ square. (This will be paired with the left-hand corner portion of this quilt block, it will also be the right-hand portion of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Teal: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. (These will be the four corners of this quilt block.)
- Teal: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 4 7/8″ squares, and will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ squares. (This will be the very center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Teal 4 7/8″ squares, and will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (precise 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Dark Purple: Cut EIGHT (8) 2″ squares.
- Dark Purple: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles.
- Dark Purple: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2 times). You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles.
- Light Purple: Cut TWO (2) 3 3/4″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square.
- Medium Purple: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles.
- White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2″ squares.
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 3/4″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square.

- Blue: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 2 3/8″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Purple: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 2 3/8″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Purple: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the White 4 1/4″ square, which will create TWO (2) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut TWO (3) 3 1/2″ squares. (These will be the upper right-hand corner & lower left-hand corner’s of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the Purple 4 1/4″ square, which will create TWO (2) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will flank the results of the Blue 4 1/4″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

- Navy Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.
- Navy Blue: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 3″ squares, which will create an additional FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

- Light Pink: Cut SIXTEEN (16) 2 3/4″ squares. Then cut a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time on each square. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square.
- Light Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips.
- Red: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips.
- Green: Cut FOUR (4) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2 times). You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square.
- Mauve: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square

- Pink: Cut TWO (2) 5″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Raspberry 5″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Raspberry: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This will be the center of this quilt block.)
- Raspberry: Cut TWO (2) 5″ squares. (These are paired with the Pink 5″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Tan: Cut EIGHT (8) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the White 3 1/2″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Square’s, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These will be flanked by the Tan 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Square’s, as needed for this quilt block.)

- Bright Green: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the Pink 5 1/4″ square & then with the results of the White 4 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Split-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Blue: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of White

- Purple: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the results of the White 4 1/4″ square & the results of the Pink 4 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Split Quarter-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
- Purple: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 7 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Pink: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the White

- Tan: Cut TWO (2) 5″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the results of the Mint Green 3″ squares & the Tan 2 1/2″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Split Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
- Mint Green: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ squares. (These are flanked on TWO (2) sides by the results of the White 2″ squares. Which will help create a Square in a Square & be the center of this quilt block.)
- Mint Green: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the Tan 2 1/2″ squares & the Tan 5″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Split Half-Square Triangles as needed for this quilt block.)
- Mint Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles & will be flanked on TWO (2) sides by the Tan 2 1/2″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Tan 3 1/2″ square on TWO (2) sides & on the other TWO (2) sides they’ll be flanked by the Mint Green 1 1/2″ squares. Which will help create a Square in a Square & be the center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Mint Green 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles & will be flanked on TWO (2) sides by the Tan 2 1/2″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)

- Brown: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 7 1/4″ squares, and will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Brown: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need TWO (2) of these triangles for this quilt block. (These are paired with the results of the White 7 1/4″ square, to create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. This will also be the center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Brown 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the Brown 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need TWO (2) of these triangles for this quilt block. (These are paired with the results of the Brown 7 1/4″ square, to create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. This will also be the center of this quilt block.)
